Within its “European Green Deal” the EU aims at transforming into a modern, resource-efficient, and competitive economy and plans Europe to become the first climate-neutral continent worldwide by the year 2050. According to the European Commission, the so called “European Climate Law” is the heart of this political concept, which, for the first time, states the European Climate Action Goals in a legally binding way. The following article analyses whether the European Climate Law fulfils democratic requirements and whether it really is the game changing, effective instrument ensuring that the EU will achieve its Climate Action Goals.
