Implementation of Natura 2000 in Spanish Forests

Alba Nogueira Lopez

The protection of forests in Red Natura 2000 in Spain is highly conditioned by geographic, institutional and historical tradition factors. The high diversity of habitats makes it more complex to establish conservation measures. The division of powers requires coordination that does not always occur. Furthermore, the delay in complying with protection obligations and the historical weight of the forest production sector on protected natural areas has limited protection in accordance with the objectives of Natura 2000.
