The MSP Directive (2014/89/EU) has created a legal framework for maritime spatial planning in European waters. In Germany, the implementation has essentially led to the amendment of the Federal Spatial Planning Act. Changes have been made for federal and regional spatial planning in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and in the territorial waters. In addition to these developments in spatial planning law, now the marine-related sectoral planning law and the statutory provisions have changed significantly, or have been newly added, which significantly affect maritime spatial planning and the continuation of maritime spatial plans in the territorial sea and in particular in the EEZ.
