Whilst the Strategic Environmental Assessment Directive was met with great scepticism before its implementation into German law, it is now an integral part of German planning law. Flanked by international law, it is now part of a discussion on the extension of access to justice in environmental matters for recognized environmental and conservation organizations. It is now 15 years since the directive was passed and it is therefore worth looking at its development since that time.
