Along with climate change and species extinction, plastic waste pollution is one of the greatest environmental challenges of our time. Although the problem is steadily increasing, there is still no specific international treaty on plastics. The article outlines the legal situation to date and in particular that there are numerous voluntary initiatives and soft law resolutions that explicitly address the plastic waste problem. Now, a first international legally binding plastic convention is being negotiated on the basis of the UNEA resolution "End Plastic Pollution" from March 2022. Such a plastic convention would be an international milestone. The negotiations are to be concluded by 2024 and here we will look at the current status. The concrete regulations of the treaty are still open to negotiation. Hence, the article makes certain regulatory recommendations regarding the future treaty.
